No nation rose so white and fair.
None fell so pure of crime.
Confederate Monument inscription
Augusta, Georgia, circa 1903. "Albion Hotel and Confederate Monument." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company.
Johnny Cash in 1968, near the Arkansas farm where he grew up. Going to Memphis, no doubt. From photos by Joel Baldwin for the Look magazine assignment "The Restless Ballad of Johnny Cash."
June 1943. Arlington County, Va. "Arlington Farms, war duration residence halls. A room at Idaho Hall."
937. "Stoddard's Lower Range from Factors Walk, River Street, Savannah, Georgia." Cotton warehouses built by John Stoddard on the bluffs above the Savannah River in the late 1850s. This seems ripe for one of those condo conversions where the price features a decimal point.
Little Rock, Arkansas, circa 1910. "Main Street." Home to a number of intriguing juxtapositions.
1920. "Barrett Paving Co., Alexandria, Virginia."
March 1943. More Marceline, Missouri. "A dispatcher at work in the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad offices." This fellow would seem to be sensitive to glare.
Charleston, South Carolina, circa 1911. "Meeting Street from St. Michael's Church." Our second installment of this multi-part panorama, with a nice view of the Fireproof Building and its Doric portico.
Charleston, South Carolina, circa 1911, with a waterfront rooftop view.
December 1908. "Boy at warping machine, Catawba Cotton Mill. Newton, North Carolina."
New Orleans circa 1937. "1301 Royal Street." Longtime residence of A. Fern. 8x10 inch acetate negative by Frances Benjamin Johnston.
July 1942. "Florence, Alabama (vicinity). Counselor at Boy Scout camp -- swimming and canoeing." Instructor for these gangly lads, captured here in one of Jack Delano's artier shots for the Office of War Information.
September 1943. "A Greyhound bus trip from Louisville to Memphis and the terminals. Roberta Locker, going to Chattanooga from Elora, Tenn., to work." Co-starring Roberta's hat, an elaborate construction of netting, fabric and feathers.
Circa 1906. "Elks Place, New Orleans, Louisiana." Brought to you by Anna Held. Forgotten New Orleans: The old criminal court building and parish prison in the background.
Savannah, Georgia, circa 1906. "Loading a phosphate schooner."
Circa 1904. "Huguenot Church -- Charleston, S.C." When Pointy met Spiky.
DeLand, Florida, circa 1905. "New York Avenue."
June 1939. "Mother and child, agricultural day laborer family encamped near Spiro. Sequoyah County, Oklahoma."
1938. "Lady of the Lake, St. Martinville vicinity, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana."
Kodachrome taken by my dad in New Orleans in February 1956
March 25, 1937. "Close-up of front elevation -- old William Henderson store (Miller's Ferry Post Office), State Road 28, Canton Bend near Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama. Built 1858." The perfect place to start your trip.
August 1942. "Vultee Aircraft Co., Nashville. Using an electric drill on a fuselage in a sub-assembly section." Another boy putting an airplane together during WW2.
1937. "Mrs. Mary McLean, Skyline Farms, Alabama."
April 3, 1936. "Stairway leading to lookout on fifth floor -- Kenworthy Hall, State Highway 14 (Greensboro Road), Marion, Alabama."
